We all experience brokenness in our earthly relationships. Some of us may have faced the deep pain of a father’s neglect, while others cherish the memory of a mother’s fierce, protective love. Human love, as beautiful as it can be, is often imperfect and fleeting.
But when we turn to God, we discover a love that is entirely complete. He perfectly embodies the provision of a Father, the tender, comforting embrace of a Mother, and the vigilant protection of a Shepherd (Luke 12). He is a God who does not show favoritism; His love is steadfast and eternal.
The question for us as believers is this: How do we respond to that kind of love? How do we live a life that moves the heart of God?
In Daniel 9:23, the angel Gabriel appears to Daniel with a stunning message from heaven: "You are highly esteemed" (or "greatly beloved"). Daniel was a captive and a slave in a foreign, pagan land. Yet, he stood out to the Creator of the universe.
Daniel did not become "highly esteemed" by accident. His life was marked by intentional devotion. Here are the seven spiritual markers from the life of Daniel that show us how to live an uncompromised life that delights the Lord.
1. Uncompromising Purity in Secret
"But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine..." (Daniel 1:8)
It would have been incredibly easy for Daniel to compromise. The king's food was a luxurious feast, an undeniable temptation. Moreover, rejecting the king's provision was dangerous. Yet, Daniel knew that partaking meant defiling his spiritual purity. He drew a line in the sand regarding what he would consume. A life beloved by God requires everyday holiness, even when giving in to the culture around us seems easier or more comfortable.
2. A Fervent Prayer Warrior
"...He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery..." (Daniel 2:18)
Whenever crisis struck, Daniel’s immediate response was not to panic, but to pray. When facing an impossible situation regarding the king's dream, he didn't rely on his own intellect. He gathered his friends and sought the mercy and revelation of God. Daniel's life teaches us that a true spiritual warrior fights their battles on their knees.
3. A Heart of True Worship
"I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power..." (Daniel 2:23)
Worship is more than a song; it is the posture of a grateful heart. When God answered Daniel's prayer and revealed the mystery, Daniel immediately paused to give God all the glory. He exalted God for His holiness, wisdom, and power. True worshippers recognize that every blessing, every breath, and every victory comes entirely from the Lord.
4. Deep Empathy and Compassion
"Then Daniel... was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified him." (Daniel 4:19)
When Daniel received the interpretation of a dream detailing the impending downfall and humiliation of King Nebuchadnezzar, he didn't rejoice. He didn't celebrate the destruction of his captor. Instead, he was deeply troubled and sorrowful for an hour. Daniel had the heart of God - he genuinely cared for the soul of an earthly, pagan king. We, too, are called to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.
5. Living Above Worldly Gain
"Then Daniel answered the king, 'You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.'" (Daniel 5:17)
When King Belshazzar offered Daniel royal robes, a gold chain, and the position of third highest ruler in the kingdom to read the handwriting on the wall, Daniel flatly refused the compensation. He was not motivated by wealth, titles, or the applause of men. He served God for the sake of truth, proving that his integrity was not for sale.
6. Putting God Above All Else
"Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed..." (Daniel 6:10)
Even when a royal decree threatened him with the lions' den, Daniel did not alter his devotion. He didn't hide, and he didn't compromise by pausing his prayers for thirty days. God was his absolute first priority. Daniel's bold, unshakeable faith reminds us that we must fear God more than we fear man.
7. Genuine Repentance and Humility
"While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel..." (Daniel 9:20)
If you read the Book of Daniel, you will struggle to find a single recorded sin or moral failure in his life. He was a man of extraordinary righteousness. Yet, when he approached God, he did not boast about his perfection. He humbled himself in ashes and fasting, confessing his own brokenness and the sins of his nation. He recognized his own unworthiness in the presence of a perfectly holy God.
What Will God Call You?
Daniel lived a life of purity, prayer, worship, empathy, integrity, devotion, and humility. Because of this, heaven declared him "highly esteemed."
As we reflect on Daniel's example, we must ask ourselves: When God looks at my life, what does He see? Will we be known as faithful, devoted servants who moved the heart of God, or will we be found compromised by the world?
God’s grace is new every morning. Let us commit today to seek Him with our whole hearts, trusting in His perfect love as our Father, Mother, and Shepherd.
